How to deal with anxiety

How to deal with anxiety

How to deal with anxiety

Anxiety is body’s way of responding to fear or any unfavorable situations. Anxiety is an emotion that is expressed by all people in general and they are natural as well as useful to some extent. They are useful in the way they give sudden surge of energy even when all the body’s energy is exhausted in response to a panicking situation. Imagine you are resting in your sofa after your tiring works. The corner of your eyes happened to see a snake that is making its way to you. That sudden rush of anxiety that occurs due to fear will help you to step out of the situation despite your tiredness. So, anxiety is not a disease or illness that needs to worry you. It’s just the emotional state that results when we behave apprehensively. But anxiety can turn out to be a disorder in individuals who perceive danger more often and even in normal situations which they perceive to be dangerous.

People who experience this over anxious behavior are said to have anxiety disorders.  Symptoms that indicate anxiety disorders are
•    Difficulty in sleeping
•    Low appetite
•    Feeling frightened or nervous all the time
•    Palpitation – a sensation that your heart is racing fast
•    Heavy sweating
•    Strange nightmares
•    Rapid breathing
•    Muscle twitching
•    Digestive problems such as constipation • Feeling of impending doom
•    Sensation of choking etc.

Anxiety disorders can be classified into several types such as Generalized anxiety disorder(GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder/social phobia, and specific phobias, such as fear of the outdoors (agoraphobia) or confined spaces (claustrophobia).

Anxiety disorders can be successfully addressed by a psychotherapist and with appropriate method of psychotherapy.

The two common forms of psychotherapy are,
1)    Behavioral therapy – It examines how one behave and react in situations that triggers their anxiety. The therapist focuses on encouraging activities that give a sense of satisfaction and ease as an effort to reverse patterns of avoidance and worry which will help the patient to combat undesirable behaviours which are exhibited as a result of anxiety.
2)    Cognitive therapy – It examines how negative thoughts, or cognitions contribute to anxiety. This therapy is structured to recognize the way individuals thick and act so as to identify patterns that makes one to become more anxious. Once those causes are identified, therapists could help the patient to overcome those problematic thought patterns by inculcating coping skills.

All psychotherapy treatments requires coordination of the individuals during each session. While few could fell the change even in short term treatments others may require more sessions which depends on the degree of problem.

What is psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a treatment process through which people with psychological problems such as depression and anxiety are handled by licensed and trained mental health care professionals known as Psychotherapists. Psychotherapy helps people under depression and mental illness to understand the emotions and ideas that contributes to their illness thereby helping them to regain a sense of control over their behavior. In psychotherapy, also known as “talk therapy”, the psychotherapists treat depression by having heart to heart conversation with the affected individual which would comfort them to let out their depressing thoughts and emotions.

Process of psychotherapy
While communicating, therapists give utmost attention to every word uttered by the person, even the tone of their talk and the body language they pose while expressing their thoughts. Therapists ask questions to know more in detail about the situation or the event that has been the root cause affecting the person mentally. All these would aid the therapist to better understand the problems and their depth of influence upon the patient.

Types of psychotherapy
There are various types of psychotherapy and depending upon the factors contributing to depression, therapists choose the best suited treatment for the individual. During sessions, the thoughts let out by the individual are kept confidential and so there would be no doubt about its disclosure to family or friends so that the individuals could not feel any embarrassment or discomfort in their relationships. Psychotherapy has been very effective in treating emotional disturbances experienced by people ranging from children to adults and it not only addresses specific problems but can set broad thinking, stress management and problem-solving skills in the minds and hearts of people.
